What is Kamasutra?

The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian text traditionally attributed to Vatsyayana, a philosopher in the classical era of Indian history. It was composed between the 2nd century BCE and the 2nd century CE. While the Kama Sutra is most often associated in popular culture with sexual positions, it is, in fact, a much broader guide to living a virtuous and fulfilling life. The text is divided into seven parts; only one deals explicitly with sexual techniques.

The Seven Parts of the Original Kama Sutra Are:

  1. General Remarks: This is an introduction and includes a chapter on the four main goals of life.
  2. Amorous Advances: This section outlines the strategies and techniques for attracting and courting a partner.
  3. Acquiring a Wife: This section covers the process of finding and marrying a wife.
  4. Duties and Privileges of the Wife: This discusses the roles and responsibilities of a wife in a marriage.
  5. Other Men’s Wives: This part deals with the controversial topic of seduction and relationships with other men’s wives.
  6. About Courtesans: This section discusses the role of courtesans in society and their relationships with men.
  7. Occult Practices: The final part deals with methods and techniques for enhancing and attracting desirability and love.

The overarching purpose of the Kama Sutra was to guide a person in living a balanced life, achieving what was known as the “four aims of human life”; or Purusharthas:

  1. Dharma (righteousness, duty)
  2. Artha (wealth, economy, business)
  3. Kama (desire, pleasure, love)
  4. Moksha (liberation, freedom, self-realization).

It guides living a good, fulfilling, balanced life, including pursuing love and sexual pleasure.

In the context of modern-day relationships between men and women, the Kama Sutra offers some timeless advice and perspectives. Here are a few potential benefits:

1. Emphasis on Communication: The Kama Sutra promotes open dialogue and understanding between partners about their desires and preferences. This is a fundamental aspect of any healthy relationship today.

2. Equal Pleasure: The Kama Sutra emphasizes mutual satisfaction in sexual relationships. It offers advice on how both partners can achieve pleasure, which remains essential in contemporary discussions on consent and sexual satisfaction.

3. Understanding of Love and Desire: The text deeply explores human nature, love, and desire. It provides insights into the complex dynamics of attraction, love, and relationships.

4. Holistic Approach to Life: The Kama Sutra promotes a balanced life, where sexual pleasure and desire are just one part of a fulfilling life. This holistic perspective can help individuals navigate the complexities of modern life.

5. Importance of Intimacy and Sensuality: The Kama Sutra is not just about sex but about sensuality and intimacy. The text describes various ways to create intimacy, such as through touch, gaze, and conversation. This focus on intimacy remains relevant in building solid relationships today.

However, it’s also essential to recognize the cultural and historical context of the Kama Sutra. Some aspects of the text reflect the gender and societal norms of its time, which may not align with modern views on gender equality, consent, and relationships. Therefore, like any ancient text, it should be interpreted and applied with a critical understanding of its context.
